Spartak Moscow defeated Rubin Kazan 2-1 in the 29th round of the Mir Russian Premier League, keeping their hopes for a bronze finish alive. The win leaves the Red-Whites two points behind Lokomotiv Moscow in the standings, while Juan Carlos Carcedo’s side ended Rubin’s nine-match unbeaten run.
The match started with Rubin uncharacteristically tentative for a team that had not lost since February. Spartak applied early pressure and found the net with their first shot on target. A set-piece proved decisive: Ugalde, despite his modest height, won an aerial duel against Maldonado and flicked the ball into the six-yard box for Christopher Wu. The center-back controlled the ball and slotted home with his second touch to make it 1-0 after just four minutes.
Taking an early lead, Carcedo’s team controlled the game confidently. When Spartak had possession, Rubin’s midfielders pressed high while the three center-backs shadowed Ugalde, but Spartak found space between the lines. Barco received the ball freely, and Denisov was often open. Carcedo started the Russian on the right flank with instructions to push forward through the half-space, while Jedson remained on the bench for only the second time in the RPL season.
Rubin suffered an early blow when Arroyo picked up an injury, replaced by Kabutov. This substitution led to Rubin’s first real chance and first shot of the half, but Teslenko squandered the opportunity, sending the ball into the hands of Spartak goalkeeper Maksimenko from close range. Apart from that, the visitors offered little before halftime, with star striker Daku barely touching the ball inside the box.
Spartak, meanwhile, looked dangerous for a second goal. In open play, they tore through Rubin’s defense with medium and long passes and quick transitions. They registered 10 shots in the first 45 minutes. Ugalde had a goal ruled out for offside and missed a glorious chance with a weak header, while Marquinhos failed to convert a one-on-one. Rubin goalkeeper Staver made a fine save, sliding to deny the Brazilian.
Early in the second half, Wu switched to defensive heroics, blocking a shot from Grypshi after the Albanian had dispossessed Umyarov and started a 2-on-1 attack. Grypshi shot from a few meters, but Wu blocked it, though many wondered why Grypshi did not pass to the unmarked Khoja in front of an empty net. Rubin started the second half stronger; soon after, Bezrukov hit the crossbar from a long throw-in following a lengthy preparation.
Spartak weathered the pressure and returned to catching Rubin on the counter. Just before the hour mark, they scored from a well-worked positional attack. A multi-pass combination involving Marquinhos, Ugalde, and Solari ended with the Costa Rican cleverly staying onside and crossing for the Argentine to tap in at the far post, with a slight touch off Staver. 2-0.
Carcedo’s team then controlled the game comfortably. Rubin failed to register a single shot on target after the interval until stoppage time, and with the score at 2-0, they seemed to lack belief in a comeback. They also managed only 34% possession, a low mark reminiscent of Rashid Rakhimov’s tenure. The final twist came in the 90+3rd minute when Yukic pulled one back for Rubin, but it was too little too late.
The result keeps the race for third place alive as the RPL season enters its final stretch.
