After three years of absence, Schalke 04 has mathematically secured their promotion back to the Bundesliga. A 1-0 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf sealed the deal, sending the Veltins Arena into celebration.
Schalke had struggled to regain top-flight status in the past two seasons, but this time they made no mistake. With three matchdays left in the 2. Bundesliga, they held a seven-point lead over Hannover, who sit in the promotion playoff spot. A single goal from Karaman just 15 minutes into the match ended any speculation and secured the win.
The season started unevenly for Schalke, but after a difficult period in late 2025 and early 2026 — during which they endured five winless games and lost the top spot — they found momentum. Since their defeat to Bochum on matchday 20, they have dropped only eight points from 33 available.
The winter signing of Edin Džeko brought fresh energy to the squad. He kept his promise to help the club return to the Bundesliga, contributing six goals. Only Karaman (13) and Sylla (7) scored more for Schalke this season.
