Aston Martin made a small step out of their crisis during the Formula 1 weekend in Miami, but team principal Adrian Newey was notably absent—again. The legendary designer missed his third Grand Prix of the season, and according to UK media reports, health issues are to blame.
The British tabloid Daily Mail reports that the 67-year-old has been suffering from significant health problems, which kept him away from the Miami circuit. Sources claim Newey was even hospitalized for treatment at one point and has been dealing with the discomfort for “several weeks.”
While Aston Martin has not confirmed the report, they declined to comment on “personal matters of team members,” only stating that Newey is working and was present at the campus last week. However, British media speculate that he may also miss upcoming races. According to talkSPORT, it was always planned that Newey would only attend 10 to 14 races this season, but his health may force further absences.
Newey and Aston Martin have endured a brutal start to the 2026 season. The Honda engine has been a major issue, lacking competitiveness and causing vibrations that made the car undrivable. Only in Miami did the team manage a small improvement by reducing those vibrations. Beyond engine troubles, criticism has also been directed at Newey, with many experts suggesting his chassis design has not met expectations. The chances of Aston Martin catching up this season are now considered slim.
